Just got a laptop and I want to transfer all my files to it via router. The desktop is running XP and the laptop is running vista. I have the files I want to transfer marked as shared on the desktop, but how do I view them from the laptop?

You need to enable Windows Filesharing for both.

Set at least one folder per computer "to share" in Windows Explorer (right click folder, select "properties" then "sharing" for each). There *must* be something in each folder on both computers to share (example - Mp3s, pics, a movie clip, whatever - NOT system files, DLL's)

You will probably be prompted to setup a local home network. BOTH computers must also be have the same workgroup identifier to share files.

Once you have done this, you will notice that you will still not be able to share files. This is due to the increased security of Vista's network protocol sends. The problem is easily fixed by following this well known procedure in Vista (it allows Vista's SAMBA to be able to negotiate with XP's using the older NT protocol).
