H3 and CoD4) and maybe to listen to music. o and another question i have to ask is what would i need to get if my television doesn't have a headphone jack? tell me what u guys think. thanks a lot.
I've had both and the AD700s are superior in every possible way. Comfort, sound - including gaming and music performance, etc. Sennheiser's might have slightly better build quality but the AT BQ is still very good. About the lack of headphone jack, you'd need some adapters so you can feed audio straight into the headphones. I listed them here:

It won't enhance the sound quality like a good amp will, but it would be a good project purely for the learning experience (plus an extra volume control if your TV doesn't have a headphone jack). If you find yourself good at making them, you could go onto higher end amps and make something really good for very cheap. A CKKIII for example, is a very nice amp and the parts only cost $150.

Get the HD555s or Audio Technica AD700s from newegg.com.
Thanks buddy. I'll probably get the 555s.

thanks scott i appreciate your input. i'm still looking into both of the headphones, but from what you said it definitely sounds like the AD700s are the way to go.

This isn't about headphones, but I thought I might as well post it here.

I am looking for a sound card (linux compatible) and a set of speakers.

Budget: $250 (combined)
Uses percentage: 85% music, 15% movies
Music Taste: Soft-rock, alternative, hip-hop, punk, reggae
Sound signature: Not too sure. Sorry.
Open or closed: I don't think this applies to speakers. Right?

Must they be speakers? Headphones are so much better at this price range.

For sound card: M-Audio Revolution 5.1 or EMU 0202 USB.
Speakers: Swan M10 or Klipsch ProMedia 2.1

1. Lower than $100 USD.
2. 100% Music.
3. Ranges from Hip-hop/Rap to Very Heavy Metal.
4. All around good, since I'll be listening to most music.
5. Closed.

Cheaper the easier for me. Thanks Scott.

I still might buy some cheap headphones that will tide me over until I get a little more money.

I mainly wanted to know what you recommend for a sound card (my onboard is receiving terrible interference/static, don't know why). I will browse through this thread and read some of your other suggestions for budget headphones.

I hope Scott doesn't mind me putting my two cents in here. I think you should go for some Grado SR80's. Scott recommended them to me, and I love them. They are open but they fit snuggly into your price range at $95.

Scott, what's your opinion on cable and power filters?

EDIT: Also, will a DAC replace my soundcard? Or will it go soundcard>?amp?>dac>?amp?>headphones

So you ARE the same Steve Da Egg from head-fi. Haha. Correct me if I'm wrong, as I am a noob also. But to my understanding. A DAC bypasses the soundcard. So it goes like

Computer>DAC>AMP>Headphones

But, I think there are AMP/DAC combo units out there. Correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm pulling this all out of my ass, and I'm too lazy to look these things up for you. lol.
