Well since I got a new video card and since I found some decent size old harddrives (some 40's and some 60's) I thought about installing ubuntu on one of those drives for fun.

The server in my house runs OpenBSD. Don't have any idea how to use it, though. My dad fiddles with it and I steer clear

I personally use Debian w/ KDE dual booted with Windows XP on my 2004 (I think) notebook. Never personally used Linux/UNIX for that matter until two years ago when my friend (a grey-hat hacker) told me Linux/UNIX handles the system resources more efficiently than windows if configured correctly. He installed it for me and I instantly noticed a noticeable increase in performance. Hope he didn't install anything I didn't want . As with other distros I tried Ubuntu, Gentoo, and SUSE. By far I love Debian the best.

My friend also told me BSD is a sh.tload harder to install or even use.
Difficulty level: Windows/Ubuntu<Debian, Gentoo, SUSE<FreeBSD<NetBSD
