| | ![]() There's no article yet, so I posted a screenshot from espn.com. EDIT- Here's the article link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2763552 I'm thinking his relationship with the GM was just too rocky to continue because he's a good coach that went 14-2 with a first year starting QB and his running back won the MVP. I feel sorry for Marty because he always seems to get screwed over and I love him as a coach. Before he started in SD he went 8-8 with a struggling redskin team, and then is fired after one season so Snyder can hire Spurrier I guess he'd hold a job better if he won in the playoffs though. ![]() Last edited by Terps; 02-12-2007 at 09:33 PM. | |||||

| | That's freaking insane, no way in hell he should have been fired. Eh.......just goes to show you how important winning the "big" game is.

| | That's surprising to me, but then again I haven't really been paying attention to his relationship with the GM.

| | I think it started last off-season with some contract issues with Marty, and then this off-season they couldn't come to agreement on new assistant coaches. | |||||

| | http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/SD/9993035 It has to be one of the more shocking stories of the off-season. If it is any indication of what this off-season will be like, we are in for something else.

Going for it on 4th and 11 when you're in field goal range. Not having your players ready when you just got off of an injury time out. Nate Kaeding going for a 54 yarder when Phillip Rivers made a game winning drive two weeks before with less than a minute left. Combine that with the fact that Schottenheimer declined a contract extension through 2008, which shows an obvious lack of interest in his job, and his inability to keep his assistant coaches on staff I would question why it didn't happen sooner. Marty is a good coach but he can't get the job done. For one reason or another he can't win playoff games. Saying that the Super Bowl isn't important is stupid. That's the whole point of the game. I do have to say that Dean Spanos is a f..king moron, though. Waiting this late to fire Schottenheimer when you could have declined his contract renewal is retarded. Now there's no one left for them to pick up. Unless Parcells or Cowher come back to the game at thoughts of coaching a Super Bowl-ready team. Which, as a Chargers fan, would be cool.

Posts: 461 | I've just heard on Cold Pizza that one of the reasons that they got rid of Schottenheimer was because he was so adamant about bringing his brother on as defensive coordinator. I imagine Spanos saw this as the icing on the cake in terms of leverage for the removal of Marty. Nevertheless, this is a bad move no matter which way you look at it. I'd sure as hell have a man with one of the greatest winning percentages in history than to have to start all over with a new coach. That's not to mention the fact that the head coach market has since become quite dry of proven prospects, save for a few names. I wonder how Dennis Green would look in blue, white, and gold? | |||||

I heard an interview on a local radio show this morning with AJ Smith. It sounds almost guaranteed that he has some one lined up for the job. He couldn't tell us who since he is required to interview at least one minority coach, but I'm sure he already has some one picked out. He says we should know within two weeks.
