Then you have the gunslingers. Brett Favre, Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, Warren Moon, Drew Bledsoe, and Fran Tarkenton.

The game managers tend to win the most championships, the gunslingers tend to accumulate the most passing yards, TD's, and accolades because they are in offenses that are built around them passing the ball 40 times per game.
Yeah, you're absolutely right. I just think that Peyton is the best that both worlds have seen in a long time.

I like Brett because of his physicality that he brings to each game. He's emotional, and that gets the offensive line going.

No doubt in my mind that when you're talking about the best gunslinging quarterbacks of all time, the conversation starts and ends with Brett Favre and Peyton Manning.

However, the gray area in my mind is for players that won multiple championships like Tom Brady, John Elway, and Joe Montana. It's tough to argue that championships aren't more important than leading the league in passing yards or touchdowns.

I would be hard pressed to call either Favre or Manning the best ever unless they're able to win multiple championships. Elway, Montana, and Brady have been the biggest winners and to me that's the most important factor. It's the same reason that despite the best numbers of any QB in NFL history, Dan Marino still gets little consideration in this discussion.

That's why I'm pulling for Favre to win another Super Bowl next year. I want him to go out in a blaze of glory.

Tom Brady, John Elway, AND Joe Montana are the greats of the league, always will be. In terms of old-school quarterbacking, Joe Montana is the greatest. He is one of the most clutch players to have ever taken a snap. I guess I'm just pulling for Peyton to win two more rings before he hangs the ole' pads up. He just seems like such a genuine guy.

While we're on the topic of genuine guys, lets talk about Thomas Jones and his entire family.

Did you know his mother and father put something like EIGHT kids through college just from working in a coal mine? Let me also note that two of those kids were in the playoffs this year, and one of them made it into the Super Bowl and had 100+ total yards. I really pull for the guys from the tough backgrounds and the hard nosed athletes.

Is it safe to say, then, that there is at least an iota of a difference between being a hall of fame quarterback and being a hall of fame team leader?

This is part of the reason that I like Warrick Dunn so damn much. His back story is one of such adversity that for him to even be in the position he's at is a major triumph.

For sure. Despite how I feel about Joe Montana being placed above his actual accomplishments, there is no getting past the fact that the man was an inspirational leader. I think a lot of his success had to do with the avant-garde, at the time, West Coast Offense. Montana owes quite a bit of his success to Bill Walsh. Steve Young does as well for the system still being in place when he took over. Jeff Garcia also saw the fruits of that system, but it's nearly worked out now that Alex Smith has taken over. The legacy of the system had to end at some point.

Anyways, Dan Marino is the best football thrower of all time. Brett Favre is second. Peyton Manning is third. In terms of how they stack up as quarterbacks, that list may very well be in reverse.

You win regular season games with ball throwers, you win championships with quarterbacks. It's just my estimation that many get the two confused.

Its a good thing Peyton didn't win the championship...wait...

I know what you are saying, but Peyton will get another ring or two before he's done. He is THAT good.

Peyton doesn't need to retire he is the greatest ever now.
