I believe he used a soft eraser brush ... I do agree on using paths to cut things out though.

Don't just say "you suck at rendering" then don't tell him why the render is not good. How do you expect him to learn and get better at rendering when you tell him you suck and give him no useful feedback?

As for the signature. It does need work, here's some things you should think about. Instead of using a soft eraser to cut out your characters, or objects, use either the Pen Tool, or the Polygon Lasso Tool, both act very similarly, but I prefer the Pen Tool, because you can click and drag it to make a curve instead of having sharp cut curves.

It needs to have more going on. If you are going for the "Men standing on the forums background" look, you need to execute it well. Which means extensive Pen Tool work. If you find it to difficult to do that kind of look, give it a background, I'm sure you can find some great tutorials at www.Pixel2Life.com
