A diagonal gradient that goes from bottom left to top right, Purple to Black. The text you want on the avatar? Vanity (with the same font as this avatar, same setup too, http://img1.imagewtf.com/3943.jpg/images/3943.jpg Anything I should avoid? Nothing that I know of.  Just basically kinda make the icon itself to appear to kinda float out of the background. If you can. Thanks!
