| Faith = Stupidity??? | ||||||||

| | Ok, so I was reading The Religion War last night and this was one of the questions at the end: "The dictionary defines 'faith' as belief without evidence. It defines 'stupidity' as unreasoned thinking. Is believe without evidence a form of unreasoned thinking?" So I went to the dictionary just to cover my bases: Stupid == marked by or resulting from unreasoned thinking or acting. Faith == firm belief in something for which there is no proof. Unreasoned == not founded on reason or reasoning. These are of course not the only definitions for these words, however they hit close enough to the mark, especially in the context of which I am using them, that I can disregard the others for the sake of discussion. Anyways, try and keep this free of directly insulting religious followers, as fun as that pasttime is. I'd like to hear what some of you think about this idea of "Faith = Stupidity". TMNT

| | Yes. My girlfriend has an amazing ass. I couldn't think of anything else to meet the minimum character limit. | |||||

Anyways, Darth, I think faith is people's ignorance winning in the battles of the mind. Instead of trying to figure out what the true answer is, they accept the simply put answer that "God" created everything (going from a Christian point of view), and they leave the answer at that. Instead of trying to gain more knowledge, they would rather sit in a pool of ignorance and accept something that they cannot prove as the answer.

Also, I personally prefer Faith == Ignorance, as they're choosing to not seek out the answers and are just accepting the ones that are given to them.

I think it's more of a case that they are not seeking enough, but stopping at something that seems like the easy path. It's tough not being able to answer in any concrete terms the questions regarding existence and the nature of the universe. I wouldn't want to have to write a paper on it, that's for sure. So, instead of going further than they have, they settle into something else. It's a completely understandable thing to do, but regardless, it still seems stupid to me. TMNT

| | Just because my faith has no credible evidence for you does not make it a decision not founded on reasoning. Believe me, there is very much thinking and reasoning involved. | |||||

Thinking? Yes, that's the basis for the whole thread. Reasoning? I'd like to hear some of it. TMNT

| | As far as I am concerned, it would be completely irrational for there not to be a God, but the way I would explain it would be the same way you'd argue it, so it's kind of pointless. I can, however, testify that my personal evidence is genuine. I am not a liar. If you took a group of 1000 Christians and asked them to describe their experience of accepting Christ, I would bet that 950 of them would describe the same emotions, feelings, thoughts, and prayers, etc. It really is personal evidence, but that fact that so many Christians share nearly identical personal evidence in isolated incidents says SOMETHING about it. In my reality, to believe that there is no God would be irrational. I believe Christianity is correct for various other reasons. | |||||
