You have to be willing to work at it. Obviously the guy likes football but doesn't he already want to be good at football? How come he isn't already? The guy that is already good has obviously developed the values and skills it takes to succeed, so I'd much rather have him because now I can focus on making my team better than just having to focus on one lousy player. Granted, not everyone will be awesome, but if I have a larger pool to select from than I have spots to fill, I'd rather take the person most capable.

Troy, the movie.
If I was going to pick a soldier I would pick Achilles cousin to be my warrior.
The movie stats why if you have seen it.
Ill elaborate though. Achilles never wants to be told what to do since he is arrogant in himself, though he may be a good fighter, trying to control him may bringts about his hatred towards you.
On the other hand The cousin has super high interest and is not as good as achilles but he is more reliable.
Its like hiring employees.
Get the guys who care, not the ones who are simply just good at it.
