| | http://www.apple.com/trailers/magnol...scamp/trailer/ A trailer for a documentary on "Jesus camps" where it is taught that "here is a revival underway in America that requires Christian youth to assume leadership roles in advocating the causes of their religious movement." Sort of scary how so many people are still forcing this on their kids. 80 million Americans? That's almost half of our population. Last edited by The Colostomizer; 09-20-2006 at 08:31 PM. | |||||

| | Yeah, that stuff's really stupid. Religion is the single most ill-conceived notion that plagues our species. We'd be better off believing in the force. SNAKES ON A PLANE

| | I work at a Christian Camp, but I wouldn't call it a Jesus Camp, simply because we don't pound Christ into thier foreheads. Instead, we let them choose. We have various activities everyday such as horseback riding, Lasertron, Rock Climbing and etc. that all our campers can enjoy. The problem with the video there is that it simply downcasts Christian Camps as psychotic brainwashings, but the truth is that they aren't at all. | |||||

Just like you would say "Hey...let's go camping.", we would say "Hey...let's go to camp." I don't know if you would consider it a "revival" of sorts...as much as a "seminar" or a "week (or two) long retreat". Basically...it's just a week (or however long) away from the "real world" (TV, radio, pot, alcohol, school, friends, PARENTS, etc.) to focus on your spirituality. You know how boxers go into training when they aren't actually fighting? Like...that month or two where they follow a strict itenerary so that they can get tougher, quicker, and stronger......we take a week to focus on our beliefs, study them more in-depth, and give praise to God. I didn't watch the video yet...but I'll do it in a second to see what you guys are talking about. But I have never gone to camp with the intention of "converting" people. It's always been more about "self-indulgance" (lol...that sounds bad...but it's more for yourself than for sucking "unbelievers" in) and pushing yourself farther, spiritually, than to try and convince someone who doesn't know what's going on to change. Of course, they expect that some "random" kids come...because they have a lot of fun sh*t to do at camp. Depending on where you go, you could do anything from Archery, swimming, rock-climbing, and any type of organized sport you can think of, to things like enjoying nature, hearing a pretty cool band play live music every night, and spending a week AWAY FROM PARENTS and annoyances. You get to socialize with anywhere between 50-500 other kids your age, and it's a positive environment. Yeah...I expect that Muslims do the same thing...and the idea is pretty good, so long as they aren't mis-teaching their beliefs. Yeah...I have heard of a few camps that aren't quite what I would consider a "camp".......so maybe you're talking about a "bad" one....which I'm sure happens in every religious sect that has a summer "get away" program. But either way......no...it's not really brain-washing. They don't induce shock-therapy or anything weird...you just get to get away from the world to get more in touch with your spirituality. It's all your choice, and it's your choice how you spend your days...so I don't really see where this idea of brainwashing came from. ***EDIT*** Okay...watched the video. Ok...so besides the fact that the video shows nothing but like...6-13 year old kids, and some of the deeper, more spiritual parts of the service............what seems to be the problem? It's not like they just hook these kids up to machines...and say "cry right now" or "PRAY!" Where is this brainwashing idea coming from? You know kids get a choice of whether or not they want to go to these, right? You know that they get a choice of whether or not they want to participate in the activities WHILE THEY ARE THERE, right?

| | I've been to many 'Jesus Camps' as its described. Although I wouldn't call them that. I've been on Church camps, Sripture Union camps, Christian fellowship Camps etc. Bishop and Rebal have described it in a way I would agree with. Activites are set-up each day for the kids to enjoy. Then for maybe an hour or so a day, there will be an 'epilogue' or a 'talk'. where someone will stand up in front of the kids and talk to them about a subject within christianity. sort of like a sermon except very much aimed at youth. It seems to me from that video that the kids want to be there, they arent being forced. I was never forced, I wanted to go. And I went away as a leader of a Scripture Union camp with school, where over half of the kids didn't have a faith in Jesus - they all chose to be there, and they had an awsome time. These camps are never to force anything down peoples throats. Its a chance to get away from the world, where people can really enjoy each others company, enjoy themselves through activities and talks or preachings that will hopefully generate questions and discussions amoungst them, thus they become more interested in the Christian faith. | |||||

| | Christian Camps aren't "just to convert". Majority of the population is people who already beleive in Christ. It's a place to spend a week or two reflecting on your relationship with God and learning on how you can improve this relationship. There's also activities there as well

Sorry, guess I'm going off topic huh? Well, the file was broken when I tried to watch it so I can't give an official opinion on what your talking about anyways, I'm sure it made you think less of Christians though. Didn't it?
