That penny does not have a mind or the ability to think. It is at the will of the ocean. Intelligent life forms are not at the will of the ocean and have the ability to think. That is a flawed analogy.

God's will! Last time I checked, it was disputed that we have our own independent will in the book of the bible. If god says there is a plan; it almost certainly coadheres to the analogy above.

| | We're at the will of the orbits of our planet, solar system, and galaxy. It can take thousands of years for just light from distant planet systems to even reach us. It's preposterous to expect humanity to have somehow not only detected life on other planets but to have actually contacted said life. Even if we were to receive a signal from some alien lifeforms (which is about as likely as that ocean falling on that specific grain of sand), there's a good chance that it will be so old that the senders' solar system may not even exist anymore.

Imagine you have a dog. That dog has its own will, however you own it. You want to train it to sit, stay, rollover, etc. It does as it is asked and it is rewarded. The dog doesn't just sit, stay, and rollover, it has a mind of it's own. It gets into trouble and you punish it and teach it right from wrong. It listens to you and decides to do the right thing for fear of being punished. You reward it with a treat or a toy. This dog has a will of its own but is owned and guided by you. This is how we are to God, property of him, however we have our own will and make our own choices. However, at the end of the day and our life we still belong to God. We don't own ourselves, God does. This is the Christian belief.

But, seriously, time does have something to do with contact. The more time you have, the greater chance you have of making contact with something. Yes, there are millions of years still to come, but we've already had a good number of years to have made contact with any extraterrestrial life. (Probably spelled that wrong) If you can be skepitical about Christianity, then I can be skeptical about life on other planets. PS: I don't believe many primitive species have developed weapons that can destroy the living world as they know it.
