Really?

Look how many people take part in religion. Look how much religion is accepted as a norm.

"Religion is the opiate of the people" -Karl Marx (lolsig)

This has kind of a positive and also negative connotation. It's not solely negative, given the time period in which it was written. Opium wasn't considered bad and was smoked openly in dens in China and in other places around the world. Marx perceived that, "Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering". He also stated that, "The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is their demand for real happiness".

I'd agree with him totally here, even though I'm no longer a communist. I think his ideas on religion though do make a lot of sense; it's sort of a 'necessary evil' for many people. Many don't truly believe in their religion, but instead cling on to it whenever times are bad and they need to make themselves feel better in a difficult situation.

True, but it often also causes major divisions and tension between groups. That's kinda my point.

And i understand what you mean Erik.

Religion was pretty much a fact to most people in medieval times. It did a very good job of controlling the masses actually.
