There is a theory promoted by some of the greatest minds of today that states that natural selection selects for children that listen to their parents unconditionally.

"Don't jump off the cliff."
Sounds the same as:
"Sacrifice this cow to God." or "The earth is the work of God."

Religion was created for a sense of brotherhood, a chance to congregate, and a way to explain the unexplained. So, some one decided one day that a God created the earth, and it was passed down to the children that listened to their parents without questioning. God is an illogical step if you really think about it.
Every culture once had mysticism to explain the natural mysteries, and the ones that were the best formed are still around today.

So, yes, organized religion is a lie to explain the unexplained mysteries.

Religion sets morals for people. Nobody would be "good" if they didn't think of consequences. The morals are what makes a person and a race in whole.

Explain how that would work. In a world with no consequences, do you seriously believe that people would be just as good as they are today?

That's insane, it would be complete anarchy. Think of how many screwed up people there are already, and then think about what kind of sh.t a world with no consequences would let loose.
