Do I have to do a full fresh install? I just learned my mobo can support up to 8GB of ram, so I'd like to expand.

Yes.

What are the rest of your systems specs? You may not actually NEED a RAM upgrade. 8GB is overkill in most cases(reserved mainly for extreme workhorse PCs)

4GB is usually a happy medium.

Just sucks tht RAM prices arent what they were a year ago...

Do 6? Cant really see a need for 8 and you may have to buy new ram to replace your current 1 gig sticks depending on # of slots.

I suppose you could replace your 512mb sticks with a 2x2 kit.

Is this a pre-built PC?

If you have the money, do the max. Vista\7 use prefetching which uses almost all the extra RAM you have to store the most commonly used applications & files on your computer. Makes things quite snappy since you don't have to rely on your harddrive nearly as much.

Right now I'm using 3.2GB of my 8GB, and the spare 5.8GB is used as "cached" memory.

Are you using DDR2 or DDR3?

If DDR2, then it isn't worth it considering the cost/performance. Is your mobo an AM3?

8gigs is 8gigs. Doesn't matter what type you have.
