I have had too much experience with this because I compressed all my clips to 264, because it was virtually no loss, but WAY less space. Later I found out that I would have to preload every single damn frame. Made editing for a few projects quite a b..ch.

You are doing something wrong. It's not H.264's fault that it lags the editing program. It's you... or the program.
low strife: Huffyuv would use about the same CPU usage as H.264 when decoding, and Lagarith would be even more.
Also, don't use the Insane profiles and it won't take 18 hours for 11 minutes :P
