A question I've been wondering for a while and I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but it's worth a try.

Is there anyway to play in HD, and capture in SD at the same time, if certain cables were used? Maybe splitters here and there, maybe even the possibility of another television?

I would love to be able to do this, but don't think that I should buy a HD capture card as I am not very experienced with compression, encoding etc.

If any help can be given, I'd be very thankful.

Thanks for reading.

No, it can't be done without a conversion box, which generally runs in excess of $500.

I thought so. Why do they cost so much, isn't it just similar to a splitter, but a bit more "hi-tech"?

It has to downscale the video from (well, whatever resolution) to the output resolution.

That's hard.

Damn. So it's either a conversion box, or an HD capture card?

HD card would be far cheaper.

Question is, is my computer good enough to capture in HD? And also, I live in England, and have no idea where to get one.

There's cables out there with HD and SD outputs, but I don't think they work?
I don't know. And we don't know what computer you have to even begin answering your question.

Depends on what format you capture in.

(Crest...)

With a Hauppage HD PVR, just about any computer can record. With the Black Magic Intensity, to record uncompressed, you need a decently fast RAID array of harddrives that can write at 100 MB\s. The Intensity can also do Mjpeg though, and just about any computer can record in that (providing you have a fast dual core, or any quad core) CPU.
