Montage Matchmaking :: Find an Editor / Gameplay!

Hey everyone, Lithium gave me permission to make a new one of these, so I'm going to. Basically, the point of this thread is to help match people up to either:

Find a Montage or other Film for You to Edit
Find an Editor for Your Montage

I realize that finding the right editor for your montage is something really important, as that can make or break the video. The same goes for someone's gameplay, it's gotta be good for a good montage.

So with that much said, here's a sweet place where you can constantly find someone to edit for, or get your video edited, and some nifty tips and instructions also.

Update: On the first of each month, all lists will be cleared, and if you still want a work done or want to work, you must repost your information. This is to avoid clutter, and keep people off the list who have had their montage completed already.

Got Gameplay?

So you've got gameplay that you want put together in montage form? Sick, you've come to the right place. This section will guide you on what you need to do in order to get your gameplay to your editor, and edited. Being an editor who has edited other people's films, I know what things are frustrating, and what things are good to have, so I can help out here.

Step one is to capture your footage. To make your editor happy, one thing you can do is to capture everything that he would possibly need to edit your montage, and THEN send it to him. Sending your clips little by little might leave gaps in the music still to be edited, or might cause problems later when you get a great play, and there's nowhere for it to go in your montage. Editors always like to see all the gameplay at once, so they can plan the montage.

Step two is to compress your clips. Your clips, when they're on your computer, should be in uncomressed AVI format. These are awesome, they have great quality. However, the problem is that they're f**king huge. So we solve that by compressing them to WMV format. There's a couple possible ways to do this. Most people either choose to use Windows Media Encoder or Sony Vegas to change the format. If you're using Windows Media Encoder, probably the best setting to render on would be 5 MB/s, and make sure to keep the screen size the same. Otherwise it will be unproportional. Also remember to de-interlace. If you're going to use Sony Vegas, remember to set up your custom render settings, and make them the best they can possibly be. With Sony Vegas, 3 MB/s is usually sufficient, but you can also use 5.

Step three is to transfer your clips to your editor. You can do this a few ways as well. The most efficient (in my mind), is to put all of your compressed clips into a single folder, make that folder into .zip format, and then upload that folder to FileFront or any other large hosting site. You can also send the clips through an instant messenger program, but the reliability and transfer rates aren't always the best.

Once your editor has your clips, talk to him about the music, length, or whatever else you might want to talk about. You can also do this before he has the clips, but that's between you guys.

But Wait! I Don't Have an Editor to Send my Stuff To!

Well that's why you're here! Finding an editor is a simple and painless process. In fact, you can even find one right away! So here's what you gotta do if you want someone to edit your montage, but don't feel like contacting the editors here to find one available: Post your H3F username. And that's it! However, just having your username there is the bare minimum. Unless you're really popular, this isn't enticing anyone to edit your montage at all. So how can you do that? There's a few simple ways.

First, you can post other ways of contacting you besides through H3F's PM system. The system is awesome, but we're not on H3F all the time. Any e-mail addresses, instant messenger names, even XBL GTs can be posted. Ways of contacting you to talk about the montage are very important, and should definitely not be a problem.

Second, I'd definitely post what it is you actually want edited. Whether it be a Halo 2 montage, a trailer, or hell, even a Marble Blast montage, be sure to include what it is. Some might be more "appetizing" than others.

Third, I'd add in a sample of your capture quality that you'll be sending to the editor. It's important to the editor to see what he's going to have to work with, and good quality definitely is a plus if you're looking for a good, known, editor.

Fourth, I'd include some other specs possibly, such as the type of music, or even songs you have picked out, but that's up to you. This can also include things like: projected length of the montage, time constraints on editing, gameplay secifications, etc.

Wanna Edit?

Everyone's gotta start somewhere in the editing world. If you want to edit someone's montage, you've got to learn to do it the right way. Here's some tips on the process or being an editor for someone.

First off, make sure you can communicate openly with them. Talk to them about their montage, what they expect of you, etc. Try to meet or beat their expectations.

Second, establish things with them about their montage. Find out what kind of music the person wants to use, how long they want their montage to be, when they need it done by, etc. Make sure both of you are on the same page on what's being done.

Third, update the person you're editing for on what you've done. Be sure to always tell them the exact truth, but don't make up excuses for yourself if you're not working. You have to be motivated, and ready to work. Send them small clips of your work when you like, but it's best not to send them the entire thing until you're finished. It leaves a nice surprise.

But Wait! I Don't Have Anyone to Edit For!

Well, you've come to the right place. You can even find someone right away if you're craving work. But if you're too lazy to contact some people, and find work right away, you can always put yourself on the editing list. Putting yourself on the editing list is simple, all you have to do is post your H3F username. But that, once again, is the bare minimum. Unless you're popular and known, then you're definitely going to need to make people want you to edit for them. Here's a few easy ways to do that.

You can start off by posting up other works of yours. If people see what you've done, they'll know what you're capable of, and that will make you want to edit theirs. Definitely a good idea with previous works.

You can also post up what it is you're looking for. Whether it be excellent capture quality, a certain game, amazing gameplay, or anything else, you can make sure you aren't contacted by the wrong people. This will make finding you an easy task for the right person.

You definitely should add in alternate ways of contacting you other than through H3F. Instant messengers, e-mail addresses, or anything else you might have in terms of communications will help your cause as an editor.

Finally, you can add in other details about yourself. This can include things like programs you're capable of operating, time in which you can edit a montage complete, reviews from people, etc.+

Recommendations

In addition to all that jazz, this thread also has something special to it. If you see someone on the editing or gameplay list that you feel deserves some extra attention for whatever reason, you can recommend them. Once you recommend someone, it will appear under their imformation that you recommend them. Obviously, if someone's highly recommended, they'll get work or work done first.

So...

Now that you know about what this thread is for, and how to use it, it's time to learn how to add yourself to this amazing list. You can do so by simply posting up what you'd like to be added under, whether you're searching for gameplay to edit or an editor, and other things I've discussed earlier in this post. The more you give out, the more likely someone will be able to contact you to do work.

When you're ready to be taken off the list (because you don't want to edit at a certain time, or are busy, or because you've found an editor), just post so, and I'll be sure to take you down. This will be updated constantly, so check back if you want to connect with someone.
