- 8/21/08 ― The only thing I have to say to everybody getting their panties in a bunch is that I understand you were excited to see this happen, but I really think most of you are overreacting. It was a mistake on my part to put a date on it at all, especially considering all of the people I have to rely on for this to happen. Apotheosis is still coming, and once it's out, you won't care that it took so long.
- 3/26/08 ― The deadline for submissions has come and gone. I have enough footage, so I won't be checking any emails to apotheosis.submissions@gmail.com that come in from now on. If you get a killtastrophe extermination with a single snipe, message me on AIM. Otherwise, wait for Apotheosis 2.
Announcing a Halo 3 fragvid of the people, for the people, by the people ―
·GFX by Zion·

For those of you with short attention spans, here's a quick summary for you. I'm organizing a fragvid (montage) which will feature the best gameplay from the entire Halo community. Anyone may contribute footage. You don't have to be able to record yourself, you just need access to Xbox Live so I can download your Saved Films. The biggest editors and players are already involved, and the entire project will be recorded and produced in high-definition and surround sound__________________________________________________
Apotheosis is a community fragvid to be directed, produced, and edited by me. For visual effects and motion graphics, I've commissioned artists renowned for their numerous, stellar contributions to the scene. The footage will come from professional Halo players, noted fragvid creators, and you. People already committed are as follows.
Visual Effects/Motion Graphics
Soundtrack/Mixing
Graphics Artist
Featured Players
- Neighbor of Str8 Rippin
- reid18
- GuN Sh0t
- Midpoint
- ArKiVe
My role as director will be to manage the underlying creative processes. As producer, I will oversee every aspect of the production, from initial recording to final encoding. My responsibilities as editor will simply be to organize the raw material, putting everything together (that includes A/V syncing).
On the editing side of things, the overarching goal is to highlight kills without distracting from them and to present the footage in such a way that you can enjoy it over and over again, noticing something new every time. I've never liked the garish effects seemingly used solely for their own sake in other fragvids. Instead, I'll employ various syncing techniques, including micro, mini, macro and mood, in order to enhance the footage. Peridious and Titan VIII will take care of the eye candy, which I will make sure is subtle, and the intro and credits. Maluu is going to provide the soundtrack and will do all of the mixing himself.
In terms of content, I will only take the best of the best from the few and the proud. You know that jaw-dropping, godlike play you only get once in a lifetime? Yeah, that's what I want from everyone. I will also gladly accept bloopers, outtakes, faux pas, gaffes, or whatever you want to call them, just know that the same high standards apply. Keep in mind that this will only work if I get everyone's absolute best, so no holding out for your own projects.
If there's a caveat, it's that I will not use recycled material. To be a part of this, arguably the most ambitious fragvid to date, you must not make your footage available to the public prior to the release of this project. I know it's hard to give up your best stuff, but remember that this is an opportunity to partake in something with the potential to be truly momentous, to have your name seen alongside those of the most well known members of the Halo community by as many as hundreds of thousands of people.
Submitting footage will consist of making a Film Clip of the specific kill(s) in question (so I don't have to wade through entire games), uploading to your File Share, getting the links from your Bungie.net profile, and emailing them to me here ―
Include the link to your File Share, the title of the Film Clip, your name (how you want to be credited in the video), and a screen name at which I can contact you. Don't send anything but submissions to that address, and if you submit six at a time, I'll probably ignore you. Just submit your best clip every once in a while if you think it's worthy. Leave your Saved Film in your File Share for at least a month after emailing me. If I haven't contacted you by then, feel free to take it down and use it in your own projects. Footage will be accepted until midnight on March 25, 2008.
IMPORTANT: Keep the original Saved Film. If I like your submission enough to record it for the project, I need the Saved Film so I can make my own Film Clip out of it (camera angles and such) for Reid to record.
reid18 will record your Saved Films in uncompressed, digital 720p over HDMI and maybe (depending on whether or not there's a demand for it) true 5.1 surround sound, using hardware put together by inkfx. Lossy compression will not be introduced until the final encode, at which point MPEG-4 AVC (via x264, winner of Doom9's Codec Shootout) and LC-AAC encoding will be used to retain the HD resolution and multichannel audio and ensure stunning video and audio quality while cutting the video down to a relatively reasonable file size. I'm also exploring the use of MPEG-4 systems to include a DVD-like menu directly in the video, with intros, outros, transitions, and other awesome stuff.

The technically challenged need not fear the complex encoding and advanced features. I've got some tricks up my sleeve which will allow me to package this video so that anyone running a PC can enjoy it right out of the box without any extra programs or codecs to install (a simple fix will be provided for Mac users). Everything's slick, automatic, and painless. It'll be, if anything, even easier than than a simple WMV file.
For those of you wondering about the meaning of the title, it's defined below. I find it fitting, considering the ambitious nature of this project.
