For those that don't know, all data exchanged over XBL must go through the following ports: - TCP 80
- UDP 88
- UDP 3074
- TCP 3074
- UDP 53
- TCP 53
What does this mean? It means that if you do NOT have these ports open, pulling host and connecting to people can become very difficult.
How do you open them up?
1) Go to the network configuration on your Xbox 360 Dashboard. Locate your current IP address. Change it from Automatic to Manual, and COPY all those numbers that were in the top form on Automatic to the new Manual setup. This creates what we call a 'Static' IP because it will never change, making it so you don't have to port forward over again if your IP changes, which it will. Write this IP address down, or don't forget it.
2) Determine the hardware configuration in your home network. Most are as follows: Wall -> Modem -> 360/Computer. If so, simply open up a browser, and enter your modem's settings. How do you do this? Usually, you will enter "192.168.0.1" and hit enter. This is called your "Default Gateway". If this turns out to not be the gateway to your modem, a simple check is needed. Start button -> Run -> cmd (hit enter) -> ipconfig/all (hit enter) -> Locate Default Gateway address, enter into browser.
3) So you've gotten into your modem's settings from a browser huh? Good job. You're almost done. Now you have 2 options. The first is the easiest. Locate an option that says "DMZ".Option #1 If you have DMZ hosting, which is quite common on most modems and routers, simply enter that IP address of your 360, and apply it. The DMZ option will most likely be hidden somewhere in the port forwarding section of your modem's settings. You have now opened EVERY network port to your 360. You can now join anyone on the earth in an XBL game, and anyone on earth can join you. Congratz. Option #2
If you don't have DMZ hosting, don't fret just yet. Simply locate the port forwarding options of your modem. Then enter the ports listed above (making sure to note the TCP and UDP distinctions) along with the IP address of your 360. You will be making seperate and distinct entries for each port listed. If your modem has a "Both" option for UDP and TCP, simply select this for all 4 port numbers listed to cut down on the amount of entries needed. (opening extra ports does not hurt anything). Apply these settings. Congratz, you are done. NOTE: If your setup is Wall -> Modem -> Router -> 360/Computer, you can still port forward EASILY. Message me and I will tell you how. I will add it to this guide later. NOTE: Can't find the port forwarding options in your modem/router? This step by step guide will help you. Simply locate the Manufacurer and Model of your modem/router, and then select Xbox 360. It will walk you through it, based on what hardware you have.
I am not sure if H3F has a port forwarding guide. If not, a cleaned up version of this guide will be stickied to assist people in getting the most out of their XBL experience.
