I read on a reliable site you can stick it in a freezer and it will be fine.

How would that help? By temporarily cooling it? I'm not doing that.

Also, I believe it is a fan related issue. It makes much less noise now.

I bought it at Costco, so I'm probably going to end up returning it and buying a new one. I'm just trying to see if I can get all my data from the old hard drive to the new hard drive, being that they are only selling the 60 gig Xbox's at Costco now.

The over heating warps the circuit boards and eventually dislodges some of the components which is why it fails. The freezer can slow the process and also wrapping it tightly with some kind of cord can keep the pieces in place for a little while. But if it happens once it's almost guaranteed to happen again.
