| | I'd say the reason is probably to make Americans feel like it's "older" and make it feel more foreign, since it's taking place probably somewhere in Greece or Rome. Given that all of these movies are based on war and violence, I don't think the directors are trying to give Americans the impression that a British accent makes these people more sophisticated; it just sounds more antiquated to most American audiences.
