Some argue that if we don't like gay marriage - then we should just not participate in it. Don't marry a gay! They say it won’t affect us. Well maybe... maybe not. Maybe I won’t live long enough to see the results of it. But this is about much more than just any individual person. This is about marriage. And marriage is about family. And family is about raising children.
Children weren’t meant to be raised by two male or two female sex partners. It’s pretty obvious they were meant to be raised by a mom and a dad. Certainly biologically speaking, nature is screaming at us "YOU NEED A MAN AND A WOMAN TO MAKE A CHILD"! But now thanks to the California Supreme Court we have society saying it doesn’t matter who raises children. AND most people, including conservatives aren't confident enough in their ability to explain why it's a bad idea to put up a fight!
So, let me tell you why it's a bad idea.
If 1% of the children are raised by two moms or two dads... then maybe they're right - maybe we won't see too much damage from that. But if it increases . which of course it will now that it has the law's imprimatur . at some point a society where most children aren’t raised by two opposite-sex parents will deteriorate. And we’ve seen that very thing in the black community where a majority of children haven't had a dad . for the last two or three generations. And it’s been devastating to the black community. And it has weakened the country as a whole.
We just don’t have enough experience with what two dads or two moms will do to a community to allow 4 judges to overturn thousands of years of human experience that has led to the best and healthiest way we know to raise children.
So not only do I have something to fear . but YOU do too! All of us do.
Traditional families didn’t come about because some anti-gay bigot sat up somewhere and said “let’s come up with a family structure that will exclude gays.” No! Today’s traditional family developed from thousands of years of human experimentation with a variety of ways to run a society and raise families. We didn’t get here by accident. And for four people to think they can decide for all of society to overturn those thousands of years of human learning is absolutely absurd.
Can you imagine a society where a large portion of children are brought up with two gay dads and taught that the type of promiscuity that is rampant in the gay male community is normal! That would wreak the same kind of havoc on society that we've seen from the male promiscuity that runs rampant in the black community where it is quite normal and where so many black children were raised with only one parent. Imagine adding millions of new people to the roles of those who don't finish school. Imagine adding to the roles of those who go around "making babies" but don't stay around to take care of them.
A case can be made that this won't be the result of legalized gay marriage. But, it's only a speculative case. We don't know. Because we've never tried it before. But there's a reason the type of family structure we have today evolved out of human experience. And it had nothing to do with trying to hurt gays.
Humans are pretty good at discarding what doesn't work and keeping what does. This is the reason why we have opposite-sex-parent families. Not only is that the most obvious and natural way to structure a family, but it has proven to be an incredibly successful structure from which to raise mentally healthy, happy, secure and stable children.
