The piracy law can probably go from just a fine and no jail to jail for up to 5 years. What if someone were to pirate a bunch of computer software and sell it illegally? That's different from some kid downloading Photoshop, for example. Besides, by doing that, he'd be making a 100% profit, which is bad for whomever made that software.

The assault law on the other hand probably has a minimum sentence of 6 years, whereas the other law I'd bet is hardly ever pushed to the extent of a 5 year sentence.

Although I where your coming from with the piracy thing where there is a difference between downloading and using it and downloading and selling it (Key-gens and whatnot) the seriousness does depend on the quantity of it.

But the assault law if you would read the first post has up to 6 years not minimum. Still pretty rediculous. And I dont have time to check statistcs on the 5 year sentence.

I agree with you in that the law might be too harsh, but I'm sure the 5 year sentence is usually not given, whereas for the assault law, the extent of the law is commonly given.

Yeah, laws can be insane -- and I agree with you fundamentally, but I still think that you may be misinterpreting the laws you're discussing somewhat.

The thing is that for the most part, you're not going to go to jail unless you are a mass uploader. Only if you are bootlegging thousands of items out onto trackers are you going to get into that kind of situation.

With the average/above-average pirater, you're going to face maybe a lawsuit, or just losing your ISP. For the most part, the RIAA and others are out to get the websites and the trackers that are allowing this kind of files to get out into the internet.

The Government knows they are fighting a losing battle, so they now resort to scare tactics.

Most abusers/molesters don't even get the maximum terms. The average from what I've read is 1-2 years tops. Which is less then what my brother is doing for breaking probation. Now that is f..ked up.
