Think of it this way: the bomb doesn't only 'affect' the wall's collapse. The direct result of the bomb going off is the wall's collapse, so it 'effects' it. The wall's collapse is the effect and the bomb going off is the cause.

Using 'effect' that way is an archaic usage, so you may not have been used to it, which I understand.

Hmm...maybe you are correct.
The archaic usage kinda throws me off since, you know...IT'S FUGGIN ARCHAIC!!! So yeah...I probably won't stress over it or anything. You can keep your out-of-date example up if you want...I don't mind.

My sentence is definitely more contemporary usage, though.
