People knew about the curvature of the Earth since Roman times, and likely even before that. Anyone in a place with a high elevation, be it a mountain, guard tower, castle, or whatever, can see it for himself.
Arguing that General AI is a conformist is pretty stupid as well. By your rationale, you're a conformist in the same way, since you think the Earth is round and isn't flat. What, you're just going to rely on the judgement of Columbus?
